In a historic vote, an overwhelming majority of Texas House members voted Saturday to impeach embattled Attorney General Ken Paxton. Most Republican and Democratic members of the House voted for Paxton’s impeachment, which took place after several hours of debate.

Abbott Appoints New Interim Attorney General As Paxton Trial Approaches

With Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton still suspended from office while awaiting his impeachment trial in the Senate, Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed a new interim attorney general—his second since Paxton’s impeachment in May.

Abbott announced his deputy chief of staff Angela Colmenero would take over as interim attorney general as of Friday, July 14. His current interim replacement, former Secretary of State John Scott, will be leaving the position after seven weeks.

Scott, a Fort Worth-based attorney, had come under scrutiny in recent days after it was revealed that he had agreed earlier this year to represent scandal-plagued La Joya ISD in their challenge against a takeover by the Texas Education Agency.

“John Scott faithfully executed his duties as the interim Attorney General of Texas, and I thank him for his leadership in stepping up to serve his fellow Texans in this role,” said Abbott. “Today, under authorities granted by the Texas Constitution, I appoint Angela Colmenero to serve as interim Attorney General of Texas. In addition to her time in the Office of the Governor, Angela served under me in the Texas Attorney General’s Office and has firsthand experience on how the agency operates. Angela’s record of experience in state government and expertise in litigation will help her oversee the Texas Attorney General’s Office and serve as our state’s top law enforcement officer as the Texas Senate conducts impeachment proceedings.”

Paxton was impeached by the House at the end of May on 20 disputed charges of misapplication of public resources, bribery, obstruction of justice, abuse of public trust, and disregard of official duties.

Under the rules of impeachment, the governor may appoint an interim replacement for the impeached officeholder during the Senate’s trial, which is scheduled to begin on September 5. In the latest motion filed ahead of the impeachment trial in the Senate, Attorney General Ken Paxton is calling for illegal and unsworn testimony to be thrown out.

“By impeaching Ken Paxton, the House seeks to remove the sitting Attorney General of the State of Texas, a public servant who has been repeatedly elected by the people of Texas. It has been a century since the last such effort involving a state-wide official,” the motion states. “Given the gravity of these proceedings, Texans should expect that the architects behind this impeachment would have conducted their investigation accordingly, dotting all the i’s and crossing all the t’s. But the opposite is true.”

Paxton’s legal team argues that unsworn testimony gathered by investigators who presented their findings to the House’s investigating committee violates the U.S. and Texas constitutions, as well as state law:

Attorney General Paxton has the right to confront witnesses against him as guaranteed by the Texas and United States Constitutions. This right requires that any witness statements taken by the Committee be under oath. The Committee failed to observe these basic constitutional tenets, and its evidence must be rejected.

Additionally, Paxton’s team says any evidence gathered as a result of the unsworn statements must be discarded as well.

Tony Buzbee, a lawyer representing Paxton, says the impeachment is based on “hearsay upon hearsay upon hearsay.”

“The House’s sham impeachment of the Attorney General is based on an illegal investigation that ignores the Constitution’s basic concepts of justice and due process. The investigation blatantly violated the Texas Government Code which expressly requires the Committee to place witnesses under oath before obtaining their testimonies,” said Buzbee.

“Yet in violation of Texas law, the Committee recommended impeachment based on third-party statements (hearsay) that were not taken under oath (hearsay upon hearsay) and subsequently summarized by House investigators (hearsay upon hearsay upon hearsay) to House Members.”

It is doubtful that the Senate—more sober-minded than the House and led by conservative stalwart Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick – will convict Paxton, but it is essential that the proceedings follow the law and provide the accused with due process. “Ham sandwich” or not, the highly visible impeachment proceedings must be conducted fairly. The Texas Senate would be well-advised to avoid the ignominy that the farcical Trump impeachments brought upon the U.S. House of Representatives. Political lawfare debases elections and shows contempt for voters. The Lone Star State deserves better.

Attorney General Ken Paxton is the one man who has stood up against the Democrat-Marxist onslaught in the great state of Texas. Democrats and Secret Sleeper Republicans hate him for this.

The Republican-led Texas House in May impeached highly popular Attorney General Ken Paxton over allegations of misconduct.

The 20 articles include “bribery, unfitness for office and abuse of public trust” – according to the Associated Press.

Paxton has been placed on administrative leave until the result of the Senate trial.

The impeachment comes after Paxton called on Republican House Speaker Dade Phelan to resign and accused him of being drunk in the Capitol.

“After much consideration, it is with profound disappointment that I call on Speaker Dade Phelan to resign at the end of this legislative session. Texans were dismayed to witness his performance presiding over the Texas House in a state of apparent debilitating intoxication. His conduct has negatively impacted the legislative process and constitutes a failure to live up to his duty to the public,” Paxton said in a statement.

The strongest, bravest, and best attorney general in the United States was benched by the regime. Loyal Trump adviser Stephen Miller just published a post arguing that a Republican Attorney General could indict Biden and Mayorkas for human trafficking. While he may be correct, as many have noted, the one individual with the courage to take such action, Texas AG Ken Paxton, has been sidelined. After members of his own party turned on him, Paxton was impeached on twenty counts, removing him from the game.
