The stunning impeachment charges against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton set in motion a process where he would be temporarily removed from office after a successful House vote � and where his wife Angela could sit in judgement in the Senate amid tawdry charges involving an affair.

On Thursday a Republican-led committee came out with a recommendation to impeach the embattled AG after years of probes and allegations. He was indicted in 2015 on securities fraud charges but has not stood trial.

One charge deals with bribery allegations involving real estate developer and Paxton donor Nate Paul. Paul is accused of giving a job to the woman Paxton was having an affair with in exchange for legal assistance.

Paxton told staffers about the the 2018 affair, the Associated Press reported in November 2020, days before Paxton would help lead a legal effort to help former President Donald Trump overturn the election results. A group of aides who accused Paxton of corruption got fired, then were paid $3.3 million in taxpayer funds in a settlement.

Should the Republican-dominated House voted to remove him, Paxton would be temporarily removed from office before his trial in the state Senate, where his wife state Sen. Angela Paxton will have to decide whether to participate in proceedings.

The former math teacher was elected in 2018, and was at Paxton's side when he spoke at Trump's 'Save America' rally outside the White House on January 6, 2020.

She could decide to recuse herself from the decision � it would be only the third official impeached in 200 years in Texas � or the state Senate could make a decision on how such matters should be handled, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The Justice Department opened its own probe in February after a raft of Paxton aides brought allegations to the FBI.

The five-member House panel, which has three Republicans and two Democrats on it, recommended 20 articles of impeachment.

The state House is heavily Republican, with the 149-member chamber split 85-64 � but Paxton has been warring with the state GOP leadership.

This sham impeachment is the result of the Phelan leadership team empowering Democrats, allowing them to hold leadership positions and letting them control the agenda. It is based on allegations already litigated by voters, led by a liberal Speaker trying to undermine his conservative adversaries, and investigated bylawyers connected to a Democrat on the House General Investigations Committee. The voters have supported General Paxton through three elections-and his popularity has only grown despite millions of dollars spent to try to defeat him. Now the Texas House is trying to overturn the election results.

The statement comes after the House General Investigating Committee referred 20 charges of impeachment against Paxton, who just earlier this week called on House Speaker Dade Phelan to resign due to apparent intoxication on the job.

Impeachment requires a majority vote in the House of Representatives. Should the House impeach Paxton, the issue would be sent to the Senate for a trial where he would be required to be convicted by two-thirds of the senators in order to be removed from office.

Rinaldi says it will be up to the Senate to stand against the impeachment.

AUSTIN, Texas � A Texas House committee heard stunning testimony Wednesday from investigators over allegations of a yearslong pattern of misconduct and questionable actions by Attorney General Ken Paxton, the result of a probe the committee had secretly authorized in March.

In painstaking and methodical detail in a rare public forum, four investigators for the House General Investigating Committee testified that they believe Paxton broke numerous state laws, misspent office funds and misused his power to benefit a friend and political donor.

Their inquiry focused first on a proposed $3.3 million agreement to settle a whistleblower lawsuit filed by four high-ranking deputies who were fired after accusing Paxton of accepting bribes and other misconduct.

Many of the allegations were already known, but the public airing of them revealed the wide scope of the committee�s investigation into the state�s top lawyer and a member of the ruling Republican Party. The investigative committee has broad power to investigate state officials for wrongdoing, and three weeks ago the House expelled Bryan Slaton, R-Royse City, on its recommendation.

In this case, it could recommend the House censure or impeach Paxton � a new threat to an attorney general who has for years survived scandals and been reelected twice despite securities fraud charges in 2015 and news of a federal investigation into the whistleblowers� claims in 2020.

Erin Epley, lead counsel for the investigating committee, said the inquiry also delved into the whistleblowers� allegations by conducting multiple interviews with employees of Paxton�s agency � many of whom expressed fears of retaliation by Paxton if their testimony were to be revealed � as well as the whistleblowers and others with pertinent information.

According to state law, Epley told the committee in a hearing at the Capitol, a government official cannot fire or retaliate against �a public employee who in good faith reports a violation of law � to an appropriate law enforcement authority.�-- excerpt, rest at link above --

To my knowledge not a single member of the Texas House has interviewed, or directed questions to a single witness, and that includes members of the General Investigating Committee. Nor have any transcripts of interviews with witnesses conducted by committee staff been provided to the members of the full House. Nor have members been provided with substantiating documents. To be clear, the full Texas House has not heard any testimony from witnesses, nor have we been provided transcripts of such testimony.

As I write this, I cannot determine whether those witnesses were under oath when they were interviewed by staff. I asked two members of the committee and they did not know the answer.

Furthermore, it is the stated intent of Speaker Phelan and Chairman Murr that no direct evidence will be provided to the full House when the articles of impeachment are called up for consideration. Texas Government Code Sec. 665.005 states that the full house may compel testimony. The only transcript that has been provided to the full House was the transcript of staff members of the General Investigating Committee presenting an account of their findings to the committee on May 24th, 2023.

After speaking to the parliamentarian of the House, reading the transcript, and asking questions to some members of the General Investigating Committee, I believe this process is being rushed. I do not believe that members of the House have a good understanding of the adequacy, legality, or fairness of the impeachment process. We are being asked to vote on impeachment tomorrow, Saturday, May 27th while in the midst of considering the House budget, and many other legislative items of great importance. I am deeply disturbed by the way this is being handled. Political considerations seem to be involved.

The weight of the decision we face as members of the Texas House of Representatives is enormous. The practical consequence of impeaching the Attorney General is to overturn an election decided by the voters of Texas. Many (but not all) of the allegations in the impeachment resolution were known to some extent by the voting public at the time of the election. I publicly opposed Ken Paxton�s re-election in the Republican primary, and I called out his very serious moral and legal failings. But if it is right to impeach Ken Paxton, it is being done in the wrong way. Barring a drastic change in the nature of the House proceedings on impeachment, I will be voting no. I will vote no because I do not have confidence in the procedure. This impeachment procedure may be a significant departure from the due process considerations afforded during similar proceedings in Texas history. I cannot vote to impeach when the members of the full House have had no direct access to witnesses or supporting documents, and have had no time to properly prepare and understand the matters in question. The simple truth is that the evidentiary basis to impeach Attorney General Paxton has not been properly established.

NONE of this is new and voters passed judgment on ALL of it in 2022. There is absolutely no legal basis for this what-so-ever.

The non-conservatives always try to control the AGs, and District Attorneys.

One cannot prosecute wrongdoing if the person in charge of doing so refuses to do so.

I think the birth of this weaponization began when Clinton fired all District Attorneys when he came into office.

The legal profession continues to be the biggest threat to the preservation of our Constitution, which was created by mostly non-lawyers.

It is reasonable to concur where Conscience does not forbid a Compliance; for Conformity is at least a Civil Virtue.
But we should only press it in Necessaries, the rest may prove a Snare and Temptation to break Society.
