'They are fabricating information'

Leaked emails between an adviser in the Nashville mayor's office and the city health department indicate that officials were interested in concealing the number of COVID-19 cases that were traced to bars and restaurants because the number was so low, according to WZTV-TV.

As of June 30, contact tracing efforts had found only 22 cases tied to bars and restaurants. Meanwhile, more than a thousand cases each were traced to construction and nursing homes. Health department official Leslie Waller emailed Benjamin Eagles, a senior adviser in the mayor's office, to confirm that the information would not be publicly released. From WZTV:

Deliberately stealing the livelihoods of thousands to further their own selfish gains

Punishment should be severe.

My own answer is no. Guidance is fine. Voluntary self-isolation is fine, and strongly advisable for the more vulnerable. Most of them will do it by choice. But coercion is not fine. There is no moral or principled justification for it. Lord Sumpton

Speaking dispassionately, this should result in the criminal prosecution of the mayor and city "health" department officials who participated in this cover-up. This should also be a valid cause of action for a civil lawsuit against the city and the every participant in the cover-up personally.

And all the other places across the country (I'm quite sure there are many) that has had similar things happen should be rooted out and the participants dealt with harshly.

Officials who gamed the data aren't going to be outing themselves. And while local media outlets tend to be less politicized than national level outlets I still think few are going to be "interested" in rooting out crap like the Mayor of Nashville pulled. It isn't lost on me that the outlet that got this going was a Fox News outlet (perhaps owned by Sinclair Broadcasting?).
