Smoke from severe wildfires raging on the West Coast has blown thousands of miles east, reaching parts of the Midwest, Canada and upstate New York.

At least 35 people have died in the fires, the worst of which are burning in California, Oregon and Washington state. They've burned over 4.6 million acres in the West, devastating the environment and sullying air quality.

Now, smoke from those fires has swept eastward in two large swaths: One has blown across the upper western US to Michigan and the Great Lakes region and over to Rochester, New York. The other has traveled across the southwest through Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky, ending in the Mid-Atlantic, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Satellite and Product Operations. Actually, particulates from West Coast fires have been detected in Switzerland. Once particulates from a fire or a volcano or whatever reaches the upper atmosphere they are blown all around the world.

I'm sure some here are weary of me posting this, but the largest fires in California have been due to lightning in thunderstorms. I know because I live here and saw the lightning as it passed through Silicon Valley. There has been one major fire that appears to have been over an illegal MJ plantation near Big Sur, and another east of LA that was due to pyrotechnics in a gender reveal party. So little or no "terrorism" here in California. There has been some rioter-arson in Oregon, but I don't know how extensive that has been.

I understand the ideological attraction of blaming West Coast fires on rioter-terrorism (just as it was attractive in previous years to blame all the fires on homeless people), but the facts largely contradict that narrative.

Yes, I'd heard that many fires in Oregon were intentionally set. California is a different matter. However - I don't believe for a minute that the fires in California are due to "climate change".

Monterey County deputies arrest arson suspect in 2,500-acre Big Sur fire

A Fresno man was arrested in connection with the 2,500-acre Dolan Fire near Lucia and Big Sur.

Ivan Geronimo Gomez, 30, faces charges of arson on forest land, throwing something at a vehicle intending to cause great bodily injury and illegally growing marijuana, according to the Monterey County Jail's website.

His bail is set at $2 million.

It's unclear whether all three charges stem from the same alleged incident.

What value do these arsonists get from setting these fires? Monetary? Are they being controlled by someone to do it - and for what cause?

Or, does Occam's Razor come into the picture - sometimes it's just plain old pyromania?

I personally think it is a combination of all of the above, but I also think that you should look for patterns and timing to determine if the arson-caused fires are being set randomly by lone deranged individuals - or if the possibility exists that a GROUP of individuals could be setting fires according to a grander scheme.

The sheer evil and convenient timing of everything that is happening right now in America nudges me in the direction that there aren't that many coincidences in our current events - a LOT of this stuff is planned.

Just guessing re: the story about Ivan starting fires - he's here illegally, growing weed on public land and objected to Americans getting too close. Just a guess....

My own answer is no. Guidance is fine. Voluntary self-isolation is fine, and strongly advisable for the more vulnerable. Most of them will do it by choice. But coercion is not fine. There is no moral or principled justification for it. Lord Sumpton

In the case of the Dolan Fire I suspect the arsonist who was growing illegal weed was trying to reduce competition. The couple whose gender-reveal pyrotechnics caused the major fire east of LA, well, they were morons. There was a female who was arrested in Salinas for trying to set arson fires ... I think she is a homeless person with mental issues. But most of the large fires in California in recent weeks were started by a series of thunderstorms in mid August.

I haven't followed the fires in Oregon much (though my daughter is in Salem at present and I was concerned about her for a while). There were a couple of significant fires a bit south of Medford (Phoenix and Talent) that I think were arson. But that is at the opposite end of the state from Portland (around 300 miles on I-5), so I don't think those were protester terrorism.
