The state of California has sued five major oil companies - Exxon Mobil (XOM), Shell (SHEL), BP (BP), ConocoPhillips (COP) and Chevron (CVX) - claiming their actions have caused billions of dollars in damage and deceived the public by downplaying the risks posed by fossil fuels, The New York Times reported Saturday.

California is seeking the creation of an abatement fund to pay for future damages caused by climate-related disasters in the state, the report said.

Detailing the growing damage purportedly inflicted on California by climate change, the complaint says "oil and gas company executives have known for decades that reliance on fossil fuels would cause these catastrophic results, but they suppressed that information from the public and policymakers by actively pushing out disinformation on the topic... result[ing] in tremendous costs to people, property, and natural resources, which continue to unfold each day."

Various other states and municipalities across the U.S. have filed similar lawsuits in recent years, but the California action becomes one of the most significant legal challenges facing the fossil fuel industry.

It is reasonable to concur where Conscience does not forbid a Compliance; for Conformity is at least a Civil Virtue.
But we should only press it in Necessaries, the rest may prove a Snare and Temptation to break Society.

I have to say, that I was very naive about this many years ago... when we first started hearing about man-made 'global warming' and 'climate change' many years ago, I thought that it was a complete crock of crap that would never progress beyond the far fringes of society.... never get any traction with the public as a whole because it was simply ludicrous.... yet here we are today.... watching one of the pillars (plentiful energy) of modern Western Civilization being destroyed before our eyes....

Incorrect as far as I know.

What they did was slim down their corporate campus in San Ramon and send a lot of technical folks to Houston.

What I want them to do is what my old company Occidental did a decade ago.

Oxy was HQd in Los Angeles for over 90 years, and had extensive operations like Chevron does across California, including where I worked at the Elk Hills Petroleum Reserve near Bakersfield which Oxy bought in the Algore firesale in 1998.(That BTW was a much bigger destruction of our strategic reserves held by the federal govt than what Biden has sold off in emptying the SPR the past couple of years).

In spite of that, Oxy spun off 100% of its California assets into a separate company and moved lock stock and barrel from its longtime LA home to Houston.

If Chevron does not do something similar, the state of California will bleed them dry.

It is reasonable to concur where Conscience does not forbid a Compliance; for Conformity is at least a Civil Virtue.

1. One of my old bosses (Lloyd Elkins Jr.) was a big shot with Chevron in Alamo Ca. I thought I recalled him saying something to the effect that they (Chevron) were going to leave. My memory ain't what it used to be.

2. When you were with Oxy did you ever make it to Libia? I have many former associates who worked there and absolutely loved it. @Isailedaway

Yes, I spent a month in Libya during the last couple of years of Qaddafi's Libya in 2008 when it opened back up to western oil solicitation. Tripoli is in a beautiful location beside the Mediterranean.

I have periodically contacted my old pals with Chevron that I know and they have not shared any move by Chevron out of California. They keep telling me there is so much oil production and refining in the state that it is too difficult to move, even though I remind them that Oxy had considerable holdings and still moved out.

I knew a bunch of Chevron Execs due to joint international ventures while I worked corporately for Texaco in the 1980s but do not recall Lloyd. Seems Lloyd's father was a real dynamo earlier in the oilfeild business when I searched on Google.

Lloyd Jr., a petroleum engineer by training, wound up as a vice president in charge of Chevron's worldwide production operations. I'm sure he's retired now; I haven't spoken with him in quite some time. I worked for him in Saudi in the mid to late 1970's in ARAMCO's then brand-new Gas Operation Division.

I'm sure all the Oxy people I know were long gone from Libia before 2008.
