A student who allegedly plotted a bomb attack on Times Square may have stabbed a nine-year old boy in the neck as part of a botched audition to join ISIS, police have claimed..

Fareed Mumuni, who is accused of providing material support to the terrorist group, was living just 600 yards from Jermaine Culver in Staten Island, New York, when he was knifed on January 9, 2015, as he walked to school.

The youngster survived the attack and ran away, but was forced to move to Atlanta with his grandmother because he was too afraid to go back out onto the streets.

Mumuni, 21, has never been officially named as a suspect, but NYPD sources have told the New York Post the feds are getting in the way of their investigation.

Detectives have said he is a 'person of interest' and have a theory it was a trial for the Middle Eastern militant organisation.

One source told the newspaper: 'If you look at the video, it looks like he was trying to slit his throat.'
