“China and the U.S. should stand united and fight COVID-19,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying on March 31, in the wake of an apparently cordial telephone conversation between President Trump and her boss, Xi Jinping.

Beijing is now adopting a friendly posture toward the U.S., but Washington policymakers should not get too comfortable. Chinese officials can change their propaganda line in an instant, and they are unalterably opposed to America.

Just weeks ago, the now-friendly Hua was tweeting out rabid anti-American conspiracy theories. On March 12, she twisted testimony of CDC Director Robert Redfield in an obvious attempt to show that the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, was Made in America.
