In the late hours of November 3, 2020, Donald Trump seemed to have done the improbable: against the unified opposition of bureaucracy, academia, media, and military, against unprecedented big tech censorship, and against the superior funding and organization of the enemy, he seemed to have won a second term. The polls had once again proven themselves to be nonsense, and the 45th president held small but substantial leads in the key Rust Belt states that had brought him victory in 2016. Bookies gave Trump roughly 75% odds of a second term, and on PredictIt Trump’s odds of victory peaked at above eighty percent.

In the earliest hours of November 4, we warned “Trump Is Poised To Win The Election. Now He Has To Stop The Steal.”

You all know what happened next. In a never-before-seen development in American politics, counting in key states went on for days on end. Over the course of those extra days, Trump’s leads in Georgia, Michigan, and Pennsylvania shrank and then vanished. Legal efforts to block what was unfolding and contest certain questionable ballots went nowhere, and on January 20, it was Joe Biden who took the oath of office.

Republicans have rightly complained about evidence of fraud, whether it was mysterious pauses in counting, unmonitored ballot drop boxes, or mass harvesting of mailed-out ballots. But the truth is, if there was a steal, it was one that the GOP enabled through its own incompetence.

As chronicled by Mollie Hemingway in her book “Rigged”, the time to secure the 2020 election wasn’t on November 4, but in the months before it, when governors, judges, and state election boards cavalierly changed the rules and basic process of how elections were conducted, using Covid-19 as a blanket excuse. During those months, the GOP legal effort was slapdash and poorly organized. Come election night itself, instead of having a professional legal team ready to go, the campaign was stuck having Jared Kushner desperately calling around for a “James Baker-like figure” to save the campaign. Instead, he got Rudy Giuliani’s melting hair.

Two years have passed. The first major post-2020, post-Covid election is upon us. What happens on Tuesday will be the trial run for what happens in 2024.

The watchword for Tuesday night isn’t “Stop the Steal.” It is “Expect the Steal… And Be Ready”.

Consider Pennsylvania, with its crucial Senate contest between Mehmet Oz and The Creature Who Answers to the Name John Fetterman. Two years ago, Pennsylvania’s election process probably featured more red flags than any other closely contested state. The state took a whole week to count its votes, with Biden only overtaking Trump’s large election-night lead on Friday morning. Pennsylvania let votes count even if they arrived after Election Day, even if they had no postmark, and even if they didn’t have a matching signature. Twenty Pennsylvania counties used millions of dollars donated by Mark Zuckerberg to finance their election activities, including the famous unsupervised “Zuckerboxes,” which made it virtually impossible to enforce the state’s relatively strict limits on ballot harvesting. When Trump supporters tried to independently monitor drop boxes, state attorney general Josh Shapiro (now running for governor) threatened them with prosecution.-- excerpt, rest at link above --

These 14 Republican Candidates Actively Fought to Overturn the 2020 Election

When Donald Trump tried to overturn his loss in 2020, his most die-hard supporters went on cable TV shows to spread conspiracy theories about the election. They sued to have ballots thrown out. They pushed state lawmakers to reject the results. And when all of that failed, they stormed the US Capitol to try to stop the Jan. 6 certification.

Now, more than a dozen of those Trump acolytes are running for key state and federal offices, in some cases pledging to take action against future election results that don’t go their way.

More than 250 Trump supporters who backed his false claim that the 2020 election was “rigged” already serve as members of Congress, governors, attorneys general, secretaries of state or have made the November ballot for those positions. But most of them did little more than repeat Trump’s assertion that he won, a prerequisite for Trump’s endorsement in a Republican primary, a person familiar with the process said.

Several of those have softened their stance or dropped the issue now that they’ve won the primary contests.

But 14 Republican candidates are all in and have been since 2020, putting money or muscle into efforts to overturn the presidential results. They are running for key positions, including in the battleground states of Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin that will determine the winner of the 2024 presidential race.

Arizona Secretary of State nominee Mark Finchem’s campaign declined to comment for this story. None of the other 13 returned calls or messages.

Some are running “Hail Mary” campaigns in heavily Democratic areas, including a challenger to progressive stalwart Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York City; a Senate nominee from Oregon, which hasn’t elected a Republican in 20 years; and a gubernatorial candidate in Maryland, a heavily Democratic state whose current Republican governor is solidly anti-Trump.

But some have a real shot at victory. Polls show Republican Adam Laxalt in a close race with Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez-Masto in Nevada. Races for House nominees Jim Bognet in Pennsylvania and J.R. Majewski in Ohio are considered toss-ups, and Derrick Van Orden is rated “leans Republican” by the Cook Political Report. And one recent poll put Finchem ahead by 5 points over Democrat Adrian Fontes.

“Based on the sheer number of them, some of these folks are going to win,” said Matthew Weil, director of elections at the Bipartisan Policy Center, a D.C. think tank.

At the Capitol

Ten Republican candidates were involved in the events of Jan. 6, with some coming as close as the steps of the US Capitol

Of the 14 who worked to overthrow the 2020 election, few went as far as Pennsylvania gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano, whose campaign against Democratic nominee Josh Shapiro is considered a tossup by RealClearPolitics.[...]

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Cox in Maryland also used campaign money to organize buses of supporters, tweeting that Vice President Mike Pence was “a traitor” just as rioters were storming the Capitol[...]

Oregon Senate nominee Jo Rae Perkins, who once called herself a “digital soldier” for the QAnon conspiracy theory group, posted on a Facebook livestream on Jan. 6 that she was at the Capitol to “support our country.”

“This is the American Revolution,” she said, claiming that the rioters were leftists working under a false flag and criticizing Capitol police for shooting one protester.

Sandy Smith, a House nominee in North Carolina, posted photos of herself on Twitter marching from Trump’s rally toward the Capitol.

“In DC fighting for Trump! Just marched from the Monument to the Capitol! #StopTheSteal #FightForTrump,” she tweeted.

Tina Forte, running against Ocasio-Cortez in a New York City district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens, livestreamed and posted videos from Trump’s rally at the Ellipse, urging her followers on social media to make their way to the Capitol, and in one video appears to enter a restricted area once she was there.

President Biden's Justice Department sent out election monitors to 64 jurisdictions in 24 states to ensure federal laws are followed throughout Election Day.

While it is common practice for the DOJ to deploy election monitors, the move represents a sharp increase over 2020, when the DOJ sent out monitors to just 44 jurisdictions, according to the Washington Post. The monitors will have an outsized presence in several key battleground states, including Arizona, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

"Since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Civil Rights Division has regularly monitored elections in the field in jurisdictions around the country to protect the rights of voters. The Civil Rights Division will also take complaints from the public nationwide regarding possible violations of the federal voting rights laws through its call center," the DOJ wrote in a statement announcing the move.

Biden's White House has warned that results may not be clear on Election Day due to the process of counting mail-in ballots, which are often tallied after the in-person ballots cast on Election Day.

NORTH BERGEN, New Jersey – The clerk of Mercer County, New Jersey, confirmed on Tuesday morning that a voting machine malfunction had shut down machines throughout the county and professionals from the machines’ manufacturing company, Dominion, were working to resolve the issue.

At press time, machines are still down in the county, which contains the state’s capital, Trenton, and the Democrat academic hub of Princeton. Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello insisted in a statement on Tuesday morning that “no voter should walk away” and poll workers would help citizens file provisional ballots manually.

“Poll workers will be on hand to walk voters through the process,” the County’s official Facebook page said in a statement. “The board is working with Dominion, the machine maker, to resolve the issue.”

The local news outlet NJ.com reported that the error leading to the malfunction involved “a printing and scanning issue;” various reports online claimed that the ink used on the ballots was not readable through the machine, though Breitbart News could not independently verify this claim. It's officially Election Day and the Department of Justice, led by Attorney General Merrick Garland, has dispatched a number of election monitors to polling locations across the country.

"The Justice Department announced today its plans to monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws in 64 jurisdictions in 24 states for the Nov. 8, 2022 general election. Since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Civil Rights Division has regularly monitored elections in the field in jurisdictions around the country to protect the rights of voters. The Civil Rights Division will also take complaints from the public nationwide regarding possible violations of the federal voting rights laws through its call center. The Civil Rights Division enforces the federal voting rights laws that protect the rights of all citizens to access the ballot," DOJ released in a statement Monday. "For the general election, the Civil Rights Division will monitor for compliance with the federal voting rights laws on Election Day and/or in early voting in 64 jurisdictions."

But the Florida Department of State is barring DOJ election monitors from polling places in the Sunshine State.

"Department of Justice monitors are not permitted under Florida law. Section 102.031(3)(a) of the Florida Statutes lists the people who 'may enter any polling room or polling place.' Department of Justice personnel are not included on the list. Even if they could qualify under 'law enforcement'...absent some evidence concerning the need for federal intrusion, or some federal stature that preempts Florida law, the presence of federal law enforcement inside polling places would be counterproductive and could potentially undermine confidence in the elections," Florida Department of State General Counsel Brad McVay wrote in a letter to DOJ Elections Coordinator John Russ.

The Florida Department of State plans to send its own election monitors to the jurisdictions targeted by DOJ, which include Broward County, Miami-Dade County and Palm Beach County.

“The Department has prepared for this election by strengthening election integrity so Florida voters can remain confident that their ballots will be counted accurately and on time,” Florida Secretary of State and Chief Election Officer Cord Byrd released in a statement Monday. “I have also visited with all 67 of Florida’s Supervisors of Elections and can confidently say that each Supervisor is ready to support their voters and administer a successful election.”-- excerpt, rest at link above --

Polling site shenanigans at PS 15 in Crestwood NY - ballot counting machine not working because the poll worker put in the “incorrect date.” The ballots were stuffed into a heavy orange canvas bag to be “counted in another machine later”.
